Embracing Skinimalism

This year saw skinimalism rise, promoting a celebration of natural beauty and a minimalist approach to skincare. Expect this trend to flourish further in 2023, driven by sustainability.

The ‘less is more’ philosophy is gaining traction, influenced by our pandemic experiences, economic challenges, and increased environmental awareness,” notes Dr. Conny Wittke, Environmentalist and Co-Founder of Superzero. “In 2023, the new eco-movement will prioritize minimalism over wasteful consumer habits, valuing style and character.”

Beyond Sunscreen

With a focus on sustainability and comprehensive skin protection, 2023 will introduce innovative products to combat environmental stressors. UV rays and pollution can harm collagen and skin elasticity.

“An uptick in ground-level ozone will underscore the need for antioxidant-rich products,” says Ása Brynjólfsdóttir, Director of R&D of Blue Lagoon. She adds that “shifting climates and humidity levels require us to re-evaluate our skincare routines.”

Skincare as a Daily Ritual

Skincare should feel more like a nourishing ritual than a chore. The concepts of skin cycling and cycle syncing introduced in 2022 will evolve, promoting intuitive skincare practices.

According to Giselle Go and Philipe Terrien, co-founders of DAMDAM, “The skin is a dynamic organ, responding to seasonal and environmental shifts. Instead of lengthy routines, we advocate for a simplified approach with 3-5 steps, allowing the skin to function optimally.” Rotating products helps you stay attuned to your skin’s needs.

Lesley Thornton, Holistic Esthetician and Founder of KLUR, adds, “In 2023, beauty routines will be integrated into our health practices, emphasizing well-being over indulgence. Aromatherapy will play a significant role, and body care will evolve into spa-like experiences at home.”

The Body Care Revolution

There's a growing recognition of the body’s skincare needs. If you’ve seen your favorite brands launching body care lines, you’re not alone. The skinification trend for body care is here to stay.

“More brands will incorporate effective actives from their skincare products into body care,” says Nina Zilka of Alder New York. “Consumers desire the benefits of skincare for their entire body. Expect 2023 to spotlight thoughtful, nourishing body care infused with anti-aging ingredients and popular components like chemical exfoliants and niacinamide.”

Hair

Frosted Tips Make a Comeback

Nostalgic styles from the 90s are resurfacing, and hair trends are no exception. Frosted tips are returning, but this time, they’re subtler. In 2023, expect to see strategic highlights for a fresh take on the frosted look.

To achieve a modern, face-framing style, Nous Haircare’s Tylor Johnson recommends, “lightening highlights to a shade or two above the base color for a dimensional effect.” This brightened look will be trending this winter.

Gemini Hair

Each year, we anticipate the Pinterest Predicts list to gauge upcoming trends. This year, Gemini Hair is forecasted as a standout. “In 2023, two-toned hair will gain popularity. Gen Z and Millennials are driving this trend, blending natural shades with vibrant blues, purples, and pinks. Expect to see blue-black braids and lavender-blonde combinations on the rise. Schedule your appointment soon!

Big Blowouts

Big, voluminous hair was a major trend in 2022. The inspiration? Matilda Djerf. With the Dyson Airwrap in play, we’re shifting from 70s curtain bangs to embracing bold blowouts in 2023. Thanks to new styling tools, you can enjoy blowouts anytime, not just for special occasions.

Scalp Care Is Essential

Don’t forget your scalp in your hair care routine. A healthy scalp is crucial for beautiful hair. While scalp serums have gained traction, 2023 will see the introduction of comprehensive scalp care routines.

“Healthy scalps are vital for vibrant hair. Neglecting scalp health can lead to limp, greasy hair due to buildup from products or environmental factors,” states Dr. Conny Wittke. “Using clarifying shampoos regularly is essential for maintaining healthy-looking hair and ensuring styling products perform effectively.”

#Barbiecore

Each year, a bold hair color trend emerges, and 2023 is no different. This year’s daring hue? Bright, Barbie pink. Following TikTok's Barbiecore trend, Pantone’s color of the year is Viva Magenta. Embrace this vibrant shade if you dare.

Jamie Mazzei, creative director at NuBest Salon & Spa, one of the largest salons in the U.S., advises, “For those seeking a striking change, the #Barbiecore trend is perfect. Choose your desired pink shade, and consult with your stylist about achieving the perfect hue. If you’re blonde, it’s straightforward. For darker hair, bleaching may be necessary.”

Makeup

Bold Eyeliner Returns

Dark eyeliner is back in style, drawing inspiration from soft goth, indie sleaze, and grunge aesthetics. This 2023 trend combines retro vibes with an effortless feel, resulting in a dramatic look that feels casual.

In an interview, I remember Alexa Chung discussing her effortless morning routine, smudging old eyeliner for a chic look. While I wouldn’t recommend sleeping in makeup, I’m eager to embrace this edgy aesthetic. Go ahead, smudge that eyeliner!

Glowing with a Twist

While the quest for that natural glow continues in 2023, expect a Y2K twist. With rave culture making a comeback, sparkling makeup will dominate. Think highlighters that shimmer and glitter around the eyes, cheeks, and even lips, drawing inspiration from disco and the roaring 20s.

Makeup That Nurtures

Multi-functional makeup is gaining traction. Consider skin tints that double as serums or SPF, and balms enriched with hyaluronic acid. The goal is for every product to complement your skincare routine rather than detract from it. A sunscreen-infused eyeshadow? Yes, please!
