Every year around Thanksgiving, I find myself wondering: how did the holiday season sneak up on us? It's early December now, and the invitations for festive gatherings are pouring in. Just today, I got a save-the-date for a New Year's Eve celebration. I was even invited to a cookie exchange, which is quite ambitious considering my baking skills. And I still haven't set up the Christmas tree.
With an overflowing schedule, I'm opting for a more mindful and relaxed holiday this time. My focus? Ensuring my loved ones feel valued and appreciated while weaving in the joy, connection, and celebration that make this season special.
Here are 6 mindful approaches I'm embracing to keep the festivities enjoyable and stress-free.

Fewer Gatherings, More Connections
Is your calendar packed with holiday events? I've started postponing some dinners to January to avoid being overwhelmed. This year, I'm planning to attend just 1-2 main holiday events and invite as many friends as possible to join me. Choosing family-friendly activities allows everyone to partake without worrying about childcare. This shift keeps my schedule manageable while enabling me to connect with more friends.
Less Emphasis on Gifts, More on Giving
I adore selecting gifts for my loved ones, but instead of contributing to unnecessary waste or giving something that may not be appreciated, I'll donate to a charity my friend would support and write a heartfelt note explaining my choice.

Opening Up January
For years, I've made it a point to keep my calendar clear for the first 10 days of January. It helps me transition smoothly back to work and life without the pressure of back-to-back commitments. This time allows me to focus on self-care and gradually settle back into my routine.
Requesting Support
Like many, I find it difficult to ask for help, especially during such a busy season. However, I realize the joy in helping others, and this year, I'm embracing that support. A simple message from a friend offering to pick something up from the store can save me hours of stress.

Emphasizing Rest
One of my best tips? Prioritize sleep. Good rest leads to a clearer mind and significantly reduces stress levels. As the holiday bustle consumes more energy, I make sure to get ample sleep. The rush leading up to Christmas can be intense, and I want to feel refreshed and present when I'm with family.
Scheduling Personal Time
Between various commitments, carving out personal time to recharge is essential. I start my mornings outdoors, incorporate some movement while traveling, and take moments to enjoy a show or coffee alone. Slowing down helps me to be present and enhances my overall happiness.
