Yearning for a workday filled with inspiration is a common desire among 9-5 employees. The dream of aligning your schedule with personal energy and rhythms often feels distant, yet few take the leap to realize it. Aileen Fitzgerald, a painter, embodies the journey of transforming that dream into reality.

Before embracing her life as an artist, Aileen was immersed in the unpredictable world of nursing. Though her shifts varied, they defined her work-life rhythm, contrasting sharply with the self-directed nature of her current role.

Aileen Fitzgerald on Embracing Everyday Beauty

As a painter and small business owner, Aileen navigates the delicate balance between work and life. Pouring her heart into art can be immersive, making it easy to lose track of time.

Yet, Aileen knows the importance of stepping back. She finds inspiration in every moment, whether it’s a morning bike ride, swimming, or enjoying time with her daughter and family.

At the heart of her journey lies a deep appreciation for connection—those cherished moments that embody simple beauty.

We chatted with Aileen about her daily life and how she creates opportunities for inspiration. Her insights reveal that an artist's life is not inherently glamorous; it requires work and a keen perspective to find joy in connections and experiences.

What’s the first thing you do each morning?

I tackle whatever primal need arises—hunger, a bathroom break, or something else!

Tell us about your life as an artist. What does a typical day look like?

Each day is unique as I balance painting with administrative tasks. Ideally, I start with a bike ride to my studio and tackle the less enjoyable computer work first. Wrapping up emails and orders allows me to dive into painting sooner!

What’s something you commit to every day, no matter what?

Seeking adventure or wonder daily is a must. This could mean a new bike route, a spontaneous river trip, or simply discovering a snail shell with my daughter. All experiences hold equal value for me, fostering a sense of contentment.

How does your space reflect your priorities and goals?

My surroundings greatly influence me. I believe my environment mirrors my energy. I gravitate towards a soothing atmosphere, characterized by a “light and bright” design. My studio's gentle vibe channels into my artwork.

Are there any daily or weekly chores you enjoy?

I love yard work! Getting my hands in the dirt is incredibly grounding. My daughter often joins me for watering and planting, which always brings joy.

Do you have a favorite scent?

I’m still discovering which scents resonate with me. I frequently burn candles and enjoy trying new fragrances.

How does music fit into your daily life?

Music is key during my commute, setting a lively tone for my day. While I paint, I enjoy a mix of artists like 6lack, Brothers Osborne, and H.E.R., making the hours fly by.

How do you stay energized throughout the day?

A quick walk outside the studio gives me a boost. Austin’s bustling downtown invigorates me, especially with Houndstooth Coffee nearby.

Where do you seek inspiration when creativity wanes?

I turn to offline sources. I rarely feel blocked as I regularly draw inspiration from nature, antique malls, and vintage design books.

How do you prioritize health and wellness?

Finding what feels good to me is essential. I meal prep for the week, making nutritious meals convenient. Riding my bike is my favorite way to move, making my commute a highlight of my day!

What’s the best career advice you’ve received?

I’m not sure. I disregarded much career advice when changing paths, which was challenging. The best life wisdom I’ve embraced is, “energy is currency.”

What surprises you most about being an artist?

The depth of connection it fosters. I once worried that leaving nursing for art would mean losing treasured moments. Instead, I discovered how much vulnerability enriches my experiences and relationships.

How would you describe your work/life balance?

When I was a nurse, it was simpler to separate work from home. Now, as an artist and small business owner, work thoughts can linger. But when dinner time arrives, I happily shift my focus to cooking and spending time with loved ones.

What’s the best spot in your house?

At home, my backyard is my favorite. It’s like an outdoor living room where I work at my café table, surrounded by nature. In my studio, the cozy sun patch from a new window is my ideal workspace.

Name a fashion or self-care product you can’t live without:

My vintage jewelry cuff is irreplaceable. I wear it so often that it feels like part of me.

What’s your go-to way to unwind after a long day?

WALKING. Just kidding, a neighborhood stroll is nice, but a glass of wine while cooking is also delightful.

What’s your favorite time of day and why?

Early mornings are my favorite. I wake up early enough to prepare lunches and enjoy quiet time before my daughter rises, often with a book or outside.
