Since the pandemic, interior styles have embraced bold, maximalist colors. The lockdown reminded many that our living spaces should reflect joy and personality. Say farewell to dull beige and muted gray—fun, vibrant hues are trending! The bolder, the better!
I spoke with designers about using bright paint colors—how to select them, where to apply them, trending shades, and how to overcome any hesitation with vivid tones.

Selecting the Right Vibrant Paint Colors
Picking a color for your home is a deeply personal choice. Lesley Myrick from Lesley Myrick Interior Design emphasizes starting with your preferences rather than trends. “A bold color should be a commitment, something you'll love long after trends change,” she advises. Consider what you enjoy wearing, existing colors in your room, and how light interacts with the space throughout the day.
“Vibrant colors make a strong statement; they shouldn’t be an afterthought. They need to connect to something meaningful and personal. Otherwise, the result can feel chaotic rather than cohesive,” she continues.
In essence, choose a color you adore. Ensure it complements the other elements in your space. Observe how the light impacts the paint throughout the day. Enjoy the process!

Which Rooms Suit Vibrant Paint Colors Best?
Bright hues can invigorate a space, making them perfect for lively areas or those needing a boost. “Small spaces are ideal for bold colors, as they envelop you and create a unique atmosphere,” Myrick explains. “A powder room painted in deep green or a rich blue will be unforgettable.”
“I often suggest entryways or hallways as fantastic spots for vibrant colors,” shares Daniele Doerge, a color expert from California Paints. “Dining and living rooms also benefit from lively shades, as they’re natural gathering spots where strong colors can feel welcoming and expressive.”
Myrick concurs. “Dining rooms are a great fit, particularly since they're often used in the evening, when darker colors shine in low light,” she adds.

Feeling Hesitant About Bright Paint Colors?
While neutrals can seem safe, they may come off as dull, especially for those with a flair for maximalism. Embracing a bright blue, sunny yellow, or bold chartreuse requires courage. It's natural to feel uncertain. Both Myrick and Doerge offer tips to ease your worries.
Try Paint Samples
“First, remember that paint is one of the least permanent design choices,” Myrick reassures. “If you dislike it in a few years, just repaint! A bold hue isn’t the irreversible choice many think.” She recommends using large samples, applying them on two walls, and living with them for several days to make an informed decision. “Observe how they look in morning light, afternoon, and evening. Colors can shift dramatically based on time and space,” she notes.
Start Small
“Consider painting cabinets or an interior door or adding an accent wall to test your feelings about the color,” Doerge advises. “Pair bold colors with grounded neutrals or textures, whether through furniture, decor, or rugs.”
Commit Fully
Finally, Myrick encourages being decisive and fully embracing your choice. “A half-hearted vibrant color, one that felt safer than the bold option you loved, often leads to disappointment. If you choose to be bold, go all in,” she insists.

Trending Bright Paint Colors
While vibrant shades are naturally energizing, the right bold tones can feel calming and purposeful. Nature-inspired colors remain popular. “We’re seeing a rise in vibrant shades influenced by nature—think sunny yellows, coral-like tones, and lush greens that feel bright yet grounded,” Doerge adds.
