Betsy Sadler possesses a natural sense of style that’s hard to replicate. Her curated wardrobe, along with her collection of artisan dishes and serving pieces, reflects her effortless aesthetic and inspires those around her.

Alongside her husband Greg, Betsy resides in a picturesque home nestled in the hills above West Hollywood. Just moments away from the bustling Sunset Boulevard, their charming abode offers a serene escape. As we drove up the winding road to their residence, the stunning views of the canyons unfolded before us.

This couple embodies the qualities of great hosts, with a deep understanding of what makes gatherings special. Betsy, a brand strategist and co-founder of MARCHÉ, supports women-owned small businesses through her holiday marketplace. Greg is a musician, and together, they’ve crafted a life that resonates with their core values. Our conversation revolved around a shared appreciation for handmade ceramics and quality olive oil. Betsy enthused about the Casa Zuma salad bowl I had brought, while the team admired the leopard print coat she wore, even in the heat. “We’re embracing fall!”

During the pandemic, Betsy launched outdoor dinner parties to fulfill the longing for real-life connections. Her canyon home served as an ideal backdrop for these intimate gatherings, and we were eager to explore her entertaining style. Discover the cozy fall dinner party hosted by Betsy and Greg in the canyon.

Life in Los Angeles

Betsy, share the story of your home.

My husband and I wanted to be close to nature yet near the city. When a friend vacated this charming canyon home, it felt like fate! We now wake up to mountain views every day. My favorite time is at dawn when birds begin to chirp and sunlight filters through the trees—it's pure magic.

How did MARCHÉ come into being?

About ten years ago, I reflected on what truly brings me joy. I realized it’s collaborating with brands that align with my values—those that prioritize community, wellbeing, and are largely women-led. Trusting my instincts, I found myself surrounded by amazing people and brands.

Describe a typical day for you:

I usually wake up around 5:00 or 6:00am, brush my teeth, hydrate, snuggle with my sleepy husband, and then... grab my phone. I know it’s not great, but I check emails and Slack first thing.

My husband is a gem; he hand-grinds beans for the perfect almond milk cortado. I like to start my day with a walk or Pilates—ideally both.

On weekdays, I either work from home or go to my “office,” Neuehouse. I spend a lot of time on Zoom or at my computer, breaking up the day with short walks. I keep my weekends free for friends, relaxation, self-care, and enjoying nature.

I have a bit of a uniform—most days, you’ll find me in a Frank & Eileen Shirley button up or Sister Katie top with comfy pants like OZMA field pants or “cute” sweatpants, topped with a Sezane coat or trench.

Footwear choices include FREDA SALVADOR Jada or LoQ Daria. My jewelry is mostly from Starling. And I carry a slouchy Parker Thatch purse. For date nights, I might switch it up with an Ulla Johnson dress.

What guides your cooking style?

My gut, especially considering my intolerance to alliums—garlic, shallots, and onions are off the table. Instead, I rely heavily on fresh herbs and spices. We also invest in high-quality meat and fish, which stand out on their own.

What’s your essential cooking tool?

A chef’s knife—there isn’t a dish we prepare that doesn’t require it.

Which cookbooks do you love?

Gjelina: Cooking from Venice, California.

The tomatillo harissa (adapted for my dietary needs) is a staple. It’s one of our favorite restaurants in LA, though it’s a trek, so we try to recreate its essence at home—though it’s a challenge!

The Four Horsemen: Food and Wine for Good Times from the Brooklyn Restaurant

My favorite US restaurant is launching a cookbook on October 22nd, and I know it’ll be a new favorite. I still dream of their burrata with grilled peaches and speck from where my husband and I married.

What essentials are always in your fridge?

Eggs, greens (arugula, kale, spinach, little gems), zucchini, cucumbers, carrots, avocados, limes, almond milk, chicken, salmon, and almond flour tortillas. This sums up our weekly shopping list, plus a chocolate bar and sourdough.

Your favorite weeknight dinner at home?

Greg prepares an incredible chicken, while I whip up a delicious salmon dish. We usually combine one of those proteins with sautéed veggies and basmati rice, seasoned in one of three ways: herbs, tamari, or hot honey.

How Betsy Hosts

What makes a perfect gathering for you?

A successful gathering is filled with laughter. It’s easy to think that the more beautiful the setup, the better the event. But the true joy lies in laughter, connections, and the warmth of old and new friendships. I’ll choose a great time over an elaborate tablescape any day.

Your go-to dishes for gatherings?

Always a vibrant, herby green salad and a loaf of Bub and Grandma’s bread—perfect for any meal.

Check out the recipe for Betsy’s Little Gem Salad with Apple and Dates at the end of this post.

Your ideal dinner party playlist includes:

My husband takes charge of the music, curating records or playlists on Spotify. Wonder Valley offers fantastic playlists, as does my friend Berry’s company, Art Life Practice.

What’s your key to a stress-free party?

For a laid-back gathering, let go of stress. If something becomes overwhelming, skip it. Hosting doesn’t have to be fancy—order takeout, relax, and enjoy the company.

Your dream dinner guests?

Just my friends! I cherish spending time with them—and of course, my husband, my best friend ?

Tips for hosting on a budget?

Focus on the people—gather a good group, and the rest won’t matter! A bagel brunch is a simple and budget-friendly option: just add bagels, toppings, fruit, and sparkling wine with orange juice. A cold brew or French press (we love the YIELD French Press) with fresh coffee is perfect for mornings.

You can also host with just drinks and snacks!

Three table products you love?

Gjusta Goods linen napkins are durable—we’ve had ours for 5-6 years, using them daily (only ironing for guests!).

The Casa Zuma Reclaimed Wood Pedestal Tray is a new favorite for organizing kitchen essentials and perfect for serving snacks.

Year & Day ceramic dishes are top-notch—dishwasher safe and still intact after years, plus reasonably priced.

What makes you anxious about entertaining?

People lingering past my bedtime—just kidding (sort of)! I love waking up to a tidy home, so I tackle the dishes post-party with music or an audiobook. Since I rise early, if guests are still around, they’ll find me at the counter, offering a martini or an amaro while I clean up.
