As we continue the home renovation journey, I'm excited to share my completed bedroom makeover. It’s time to kick off our shoes and embrace the comfort of this freshly styled space! Without any structural changes, the room feels transformed, thanks to new plaster walls, soft rugs, and a custom bed I've longed for.

This past year has highlighted the need for a personal haven where we can recharge and find peace amidst the chaos of life.

Keep reading to discover how I crafted this cozy retreat, and check out the video tour on my IGTV.

Cozy neutral bedroom makeover

A Soft Neutral Color Scheme

If you know me, you recognize my love for neutral tones. I aimed for a calming atmosphere with walls that feel inviting rather than overwhelming. I found a product called American Clay, a natural plaster from New Mexico, which gives a soft, organic look. Plus, it’s non-toxic and eco-friendly.

We chose the shade Forté White, and it’s so stunning that I’ve left some walls bare to showcase its beauty. While this project isn't a simple DIY, hiring an expert made it manageable. The process involved a base coat and two top layers, taking about three weeks.

Textured walls add coziness while keeping the space light and airy, enhancing the room's visual interest without introducing color.

A Custom Wood Bed

For years, I’ve admired low-profile wood beds with integrated nightstands but never found one that fit my vision. So, I decided to design my own dream bed, and surprisingly, it was on par with the prices of ready-made options.

With help from designer Claire Zinnecker, we sketched out the design, and our builders at Petrified Design brought it to life.

Additions and Details

I opted for a matte, neutral finish that complemented the room’s grey tones, selecting unstained white oak for the wood.

Next, I chose light fixtures for the headboard. I picked these matte black Fjord Spot sconces, which were key to achieving the desired aesthetic. Concealing the wiring was tricky, but we devised a plan to keep everything neat.

We ran the connections between the wall and headboard, adding a switch in the nightstand for easy access and an outlet inside the drawer for a hidden charging station. Now, my phone can charge overnight without disrupting my sleep.

I’m beyond happy with how the bed turned out, and it’s inspired me to explore more custom projects in the future!

A Cozy Reading Nook

After eyeing this chair for months and searching for alternatives, I realized this was the one for me. I made it the focal point of the bay window, which boasts the best views in our home.

This area has seen many arrangements over the years, but this configuration is my favorite. Creating a cozy nook, no matter how small, greatly enhances the room. A plush rug, low coffee table, and comfy floor cushions are perfect for relaxing or meditating. I love this simple accent table I found on sale at Target.

The Softest Rugs

Previously, I favored natural fiber rugs like jute, but they weren’t the softest underfoot. Now, with a plush wool rug, I can’t believe I ever settled for anything else. It’s the perfect luxury to step onto something so warm and inviting each morning.

The main rug is the Malawi Oatmeal Wool Rug from Dear Keaton, a stunning addition made from sustainable materials. The smaller rug in the bay window area was a bargain from Target— a Moroccan-style plush accent rug that adds texture and warmth.

Pro tip: Invest in a soft rug for a cozy bedroom vibe.

A Dual-Purpose TV Console

One challenge in the bedroom is balancing comfort with the presence of a TV. I want my space to feel like a spa retreat, and traditional TVs don’t fit that vibe. The solution? A sleek Samsung Frame TV that doubles as art, paired with a stylish console table to showcase my plants.

Another cozy bedroom tip: group plants together for a more impactful display. This transforms the space and provides a dedicated “plant area” to soak up sunlight.
