After a 12-year absence, I recently returned to Edinburgh, Scotland, a city filled with magic and history. My visit to this enchanting place, where I studied abroad in 2012, reminded me of its unique charm.
While dark academia wasn't a popular topic years ago, Edinburgh embodies this aesthetic beautifully. The blend of its university backdrop, historic architecture, tweed fashion, and shadowy streets made me consider relocating. I can easily picture my ideal flat, adorned with Victorian decor, rich textiles, and an abundance of leather-bound books.

Styling Your Home with Library Aesthetic
Relocating may not be feasible, but anyone can bring the library aesthetic into their homes. I'll share tips on how to achieve this cozy vibe. Just a heads up—you might find yourself enjoying home life even more!

Create a Moody Atmosphere
To capture the dark academia vibe, aim for a moody ambiance. During my stay at 100 Princes Street, I encountered a dining area that perfectly exemplified this. With its plaid accents, multiple fireplaces, and aged leather seating, it felt reminiscent of a professor's study. Nautical artwork contributed to the library ambiance, adding a timeless quality. Such spaces invite you to relax with tea or a good book, wrapped in rich, warm tones.

Say Goodbye to Plain White Walls
Dark academia spaces never feature plain white walls or bare painted surfaces. Embrace deep colors—think navy or forest green—or opt for patterned wallpaper. Create a gallery wall with art and mix in small mirrors or candle sconces to enhance visual appeal. Consider incorporating affordable digital art downloads from Etsy by searching for "dark academia" to find plenty of options.

Layer Your Decor Wisely
Embracing a layered, lived-in look is crucial for dark academia. Feel free to fill a wall with books or showcase your favorite collectibles (like bust sculptures!). Just remember, it's essential to keep unsightly items like cords and junk mail hidden to maintain the enchanting atmosphere.

Embrace Vintage Finds
For accessories, lean towards vintage rather than contemporary pieces. Scour vintage shops for leather-bound books, sculptures, ornate mirrors, and plush chairs. Now's not the moment for modern items like acrylic tables or bouclé sofas.
