Our goal for the Zuma Beach House renovation is to make it a welcoming space for family and friends, where we can enjoy long weekends, summer vacations, and holidays together. With a compact layout, we aim to utilize every square inch effectively, balancing aesthetics and practicality in each room.

In this post, I'm excited to reveal our vision and designs for a chic bunk room—an area that can host an entire family while fitting seamlessly with the home's Japandi-inspired style.

A Comfortable Retreat

Though compact, this room will be among the most versatile in our home. Adam and I have designed a sleek bunk system from white oak, featuring clean lines and understated headboards for comfort while reading. One section consists of two twin beds stacked, while the other includes a queen below and a twin above, accommodating up to five guests comfortably. Each bed will have a bronze wall sconce for gentle lighting, and the overall color scheme will remain warm, textured, and inviting.

The flooring features Ingrid by Stuga, a classic oak that adds subtle depth. We'll also use Portola Paints' Roman Clay in Patagonia to create a cohesive aesthetic throughout the house, with its soft texture and light-catching finish promoting a serene, lived-in ambiance.

The room is flooded with natural light from floor-to-ceiling Marvin sliding doors that lead to a cozy private patio, enhancing the indoor-outdoor connection. Light management is crucial in any bedroom, so we'll use two layers of drapery from Graber: blackout options for sleeping and sheer linen curtains for daytime brightness. I'm still finalizing fabric choices, but here's some of my inspiration:

At the room's center hangs a woven pendant from Lightology's Woven collection. This sculptural piece casts a beautiful shadow across the walls, with its natural fibers and handwoven design adding artistry while maintaining a relaxed vibe.

A Serene Bunk Bath

Adjacent to the bunk room is a charming, compact bathroom. We aimed for a calming atmosphere enhanced by a few unique features.

We selected a Duravit vanity in natural oak alongside the ME by Starck wall-mounted toilet already used in the house. Its sleek and modern design proves even practical items can elevate a space when chosen with care.

Over the vanity, a seagrass pendant light will add warmth and texture, complemented by the Chico Small Arch Mirror, which brings a refined touch. Its slim antique brass bar suspends a minimalist arch, reflecting the home's modern yet natural design. Throughout the space, we will use Kallista fixtures in unlacquered brass—timeless and destined to develop a rich patina.

For the bathtub, I envisioned a tile design featuring a terra cotta pattern with a deep green insert. The talented team at CLAY Imports helped create this custom tile pattern in warm tones. When we visited their studio in San Miguel de Allende, I witnessed the handmade creation process—an element that will make this small bathroom feel extraordinary once completed.

A Thoughtful and Inviting Space

These spaces demonstrate that even the tiniest areas can feel special when every detail is carefully selected. By embracing minimalism and allowing materials to shine, I hope our bunk room and bath become a cozy, light-filled haven—reflecting the essence of the Zuma Beach House philosophy: intentional design, natural textures, and a calming atmosphere.
