We're in the thrilling phase of our Malibu renovation! With concrete laid for the addition and the framing for the kitchen and great room complete, the transformation feels increasingly tangible.

Today, let's chat about a space I've envisioned since we embarked on this renovation five years ago: the Media Room. This will be our family's cozy retreat—ideal for movie nights and quality time together. It's all about 'Operation: Cozy,' and here's our approach to crafting a stylish and connected environment.

Vaulted Ceilings for an Expansive Atmosphere

A significant change in this room will be the ceiling. During our first tour with the realtor, we noted the low ceilings made it feel cramped. Thus, we opted to vault the ceiling, promising to transform the atmosphere. Upon entering, the new space will feel open and airy, all while maintaining the same square footage.

Before vs. After: Our Vision

Beautiful and Functional Built-Ins

The centerpiece of this room will be a full wall of built-ins featuring open shelves, storage drawers, and a Frame TV. This will be the only TV in the house—an intentional choice to encourage a lifestyle centered around outdoor activities, family meals, and leisurely mornings, rather than screen time. This space will host cozy movie nights, board game marathons, or reading sessions on rainy days.

The open shelving will serve multiple purposes—beyond storage, it will showcase our favorite books, decorative pieces, and unique finds. I aim for the built-ins to blend seamlessly with the home's design, steering clear of a purely utilitarian look. Closed cabinetry on the lower half will house board games, extra throws, and gadgets.

Choosing Between Oak and Cane for Cabinet Fronts

For the cabinetry, I considered two options: solid oak and cane-front panels. Cane offers lovely texture, and we compared both in the space. Ultimately, we went with solid oak for its timeless appeal. We want this room to feel inviting, avoiding trends that may not age well. Here are the visualizations of both styles—what do you think?

Creating an Arched Doorway

Initially, plans included a typical door connecting the Great Room to the Media Room. However, I wanted something with more character, so we designed an arched doorway that adds charm. This subtle change enhances the transition between rooms and provides a custom touch reflective of Mediterranean design elements.

Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Flow

As with the rest of the house, we aim for maximum indoor-outdoor connectivity in this room. We're installing two sets of glass pocket doors that will open fully to the backyard and ocean view, effectively merging the spaces.

To soften the light and add elegance, we'll use floor-to-ceiling drapery with a recessed track for a clean, unobtrusive look that complements the architecture.

Prioritizing What Truly Matters

I was initially concerned that this room might feel more functional than inviting. I wanted it to be more than just about the TV or storage. Now, I'm thrilled with our designs, which integrate beautifully with our Japandi Beach House aesthetic. I can already picture the wonderful moments we'll create here—family game nights, movie marathons, and the simple joy of togetherness. Every decision, from the vaulted ceilings to the curated built-ins, enhances comfort and intention.

I eagerly anticipate bringing this vision to life and can't wait to share the final results!
