When we started planning the Zuma Beach House, our vision was clear: a welcoming space for family and friends. A sanctuary to enjoy leisurely meals outdoors and cozy evenings by the fire, where everyone feels at ease the moment they arrive.
This philosophy shaped not only the communal areas but also the more intimate spaces, like the guest room and bath, where true hospitality thrives. I envisioned a spot where guests could rise with the sun or savor a leisurely morning in bed, brewing coffee or curling up with a great read, all while feeling nurtured and at home.
Design Inspiration Behind the Room:
Creating a Cozy Retreat in a Compact Space
Our main challenge was the guest room's limited size and the absence of a closet. After considering custom built-ins, the price tags were more than we could afford. Yet, I was determined to maintain a welcoming atmosphere where guests could unpack and feel comfortable. I often think back to boutique hotel rooms we've stayed in; they are compact yet meticulously designed to maximize comfort.
We opted for a semi-custom approach. We're purchasing the IKEA PAX wardrobe system, complemented by custom walnut doors from Fronteriors. Extending the unit to the ceiling will create a built-in feel. Additionally, we’re adding a sleek walnut desk alongside it, providing a cozy workspace or coffee nook for guests.
What I cherish about the design journey is discovering innovative, accessible solutions that harmonize beauty and practicality.
Blending Indoor and Outdoor Spaces
Zuma Beach House embodies a seamless transition between interior and exterior. In the guest room, sliding glass doors lead to a private patio framed by warm wood fencing. I envision guests enjoying their morning coffee outside or relaxing in the hammock during the afternoon.
For added texture and privacy, we’re layering two sets of curtains from Graber— one sheer and one light-blocking—mounted flush in the ceiling to keep the hardware out of sight. These thoughtful details contribute to an architecturally enriched and tranquil atmosphere.
To Vault or Not to Vault
Our most significant investment was deciding to vault the ceilings. The original room had low ceilings that made it feel cramped and dark. Though this choice stretched our budget, we agreed that creating a sense of openness was essential. In a small room, spaciousness can transform it into something extraordinary.
We’re featuring a large, eye-catching fixture in the center: the Samsara Chandelier by Currey & Company. Crafted from thick, bent rattan, it adds an organic, sculptural element. Some may hesitate to use such a bold piece in a small area, but I love how it introduces a striking contrast that enhances the room's character.
Creating the Right Ambiance with Lighting
Lighting is crucial for setting the mood. I knew I wanted to incorporate the Dax Wall Sconces in Brass from Lightology on either side of the bed. However, when it came time to discuss mounting height, I hesitated. Traditional advice suggests placing sconces above the headboard, around 55"–60" from the floor. Still, I envisioned a softer glow to complement the low-profile bed. Eventually, I trusted my instincts and mounted them at 38–40 inches from the floor. It’s a subtle departure from convention, but I believe it creates a more inviting, relaxed vibe.
A Compact Yet Inviting Bathroom
Similar to the bedroom, the guest bathroom is small but must offer both functionality and a pleasant atmosphere. To avoid an overly utilitarian feel, I opted for stunning unglazed natural zellige tile from Zia Tile, covering the floors and shower walls. The tile’s warmth and texture will create a serene spa-like experience.
For the plumbing fixtures, we selected unlacquered brass from Kallista’s one collection. I appreciate the “living” finish that develops character over time. And yes, I have a favorite toilet: our ME by Starck Wall Mounted Toilet from Duravit is both functional and beautifully designed. Its sleek, minimal look enhances everyday routines.
Above the vanity, I’m hanging the Kasbah Rattan Pendant by Woven from Lightology. It’s a charming, timeless piece crafted from natural materials.
Soft Walls for a Calming Effect
In both rooms, we’re using Patagonia Roman Clay by Portola Paints. It brings warmth and a gentle movement that gives the walls a soft, cloud-like quality. In a home characterized by warm minimalism and Japandi influences, the walls are just as significant as the furniture, establishing the mood before you notice the decor.
Designing for Desired Feelings
Ultimately, this guest suite transcends being just a bedroom and bathroom; it’s an opportunity to unwind and savor the moment. My design philosophy revolves around identifying how you want to feel, and that rings especially true here. Every detail, from the hammock outside to the brass fixtures in the shower, invites a sense of calm and connection to nature and loved ones.
Because the true aspiration for Zuma Beach House isn’t merely a beautiful environment—it’s the cherished memories created with those who fill it.
