Last summer, I spent a good amount of time in Europe, which got me thinking: do Europeans even drink water? Or are we Americans just exceptionally thirsty? Personally, I’m not one to carry around a 40-ounce water bottle—it feels cumbersome. Yet, I’ve always enjoyed having a refreshing glass of water close by. I never thought much about it, occasionally adding a slice of citrus for flavor. But with the growing desire to make everything visually appealing, our hydration habits are evolving. Enter sexy water.

We all know staying hydrated is crucial for many bodily functions, from digestion to supporting detoxification to enhancing cognitive abilities. But is hydration trendy? It seems that with a little creativity, achieving our daily hydration goals can become an exciting part of our wellness journey.

What is Sexy Water? Exploring the Hydration Trend

The phrase “sexy water” emerged in October 2023, thanks to TikTok creator Kelly Stranick, who showcased her enhanced hydration routine. In her video, which is part of her “sexy water series,” Stranick shares how she infuses her water with fruits, vegetables, and supplements to enrich plain water. She views this as a fun way to incorporate hydration into her wellness routine. As we know, romanticizing daily habits can motivate healthier choices, no matter how simple.

However, it’s important to remember Stranick is not a health professional. She emphasizes that her knowledge of the benefits of sexy water ingredients comes from her online research. While we find the concept intriguing, we sought expert insights before diving into this trend. Below, nutritionist Jessica Sepel and Integrative Nutrition Health Coach Edie Horstman discuss the benefits, myths, and key points about sexy water.

Sexy Water: Advantages, Cautions, and Expert Advice for 2025

Sexy water isn't merely a flavored drink; it’s often a carefully crafted blend of various fruits, vegetables, supplement powders, and tinctures. While more ingredients can sometimes enhance benefits, it’s vital to choose wisely. Horstman points out that certain combinations can improve absorption and enhance benefits. Here are a few examples:

  • Vitamin D with calcium improves their effectiveness, as vitamin D helps the intestines absorb calcium, promoting bone health and lowering osteoporosis risk.
  • Vitamin C and iron together boost the absorption of non-heme iron, which is particularly helpful for vegetarians and vegans.

On the flip side, mixing both calcium and magnesium in your sexy water may decrease their individual effectiveness.

Sepel concurs, emphasizing that the combination of ingredients and personal health matters. She believes hydration should be straightforward and enjoyable.

Her brand, JSHealth, aimed to simplify hydration by creating magnesium capsules in powdered form. As Sepel explains, the goal was to enrich water with nutrients while promoting muscle relaxation. When done thoughtfully—with professional guidance—sexy water can be beneficial.

Potential Drawbacks of Sexy Water

Generally, you’re unlikely to overdo any additions in your sexy water. However, Horstman warns that “too much chlorophyll may cause digestive issues, and high doses of mushroom extracts can lead to stomach discomfort.”

Sepel adds that our bodies can only absorb a specific amount of vitamins in a day. Therefore, it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional for proper dosing. Research your ingredients before adding them to your drink. JSHealth products are formulated to provide optimal doses for maximum effectiveness.

Is Mixing Supplements Safe?

It really depends on the ingredients you’re combining. Horstman supports Stranick’s original sexy water recipe, stating that “lemon, cucumber, and spearmint are excellent for hydration and digestion, while mushroom supplements can enhance immune function and cognitive abilities.”

This advice assumes that the sexy water recipes involve small amounts of each ingredient, as “too many supplements can dilute their effectiveness.”

Considerations Before Trying Sexy Water

Horstman stresses the importance of understanding your motivation. “Do you want a tastier way to take your supplements? Seeking a more enjoyable way to hydrate? Think about your intention.” She advises that you consider whether your additions boost the effectiveness of other ingredients.

Before embracing any health trend—sexy water included—ask yourself these questions:

  • Is there scientific evidence backing these claims?
  • Can you afford it?
  • Does it align with your health objectives?

Sepel shares this perspective, urging people to adopt sustainable practices rather than follow fleeting trends. She promotes what she calls ‘The Health Life’—making choices that are realistic and focused on the essentials: quality sleep, stress management, nourishing foods, self-love, and gentle exercise.

Keeping this framework in mind, Sepel believes making your water ‘sexy’ can enhance hydration and make it more appealing.
