Recently, I felt a strong desire for a deeper understanding of myself—a steady inner peace that reflects confidence in who I am. I wanted to believe that my presence is sufficient, not only for others but for myself. It was during this introspective journey that I encountered Elle Pugh, a Certified Enneagram Facilitator and Coach, at a summit. Collaborating with her provided unexpected clarity, guiding me towards personal growth I hadn’t imagined. Elle’s method, centered on the Enneagram, felt like an invitation to shed old habits and embrace a broader existence.
This experience was life-changing, revealing areas where I held on too tightly and encouraging me to release what no longer served my growth. The Enneagram transformed from a mere personality tool to a reflection of my strengths and weaknesses. I became eager to explore this knowledge not just for my benefit but to share it with others. Recognizing how we operate at our core can empower us toward healthier, more meaningful relationships in every aspect of life.

Understanding the Enneagram: Insights from an Expert
To fully appreciate the Enneagram’s potential, I spoke with Elle to learn how this system fosters authentic connections. We explored how our Enneagram type—essentially our ego structure—shapes our worldview and interactions. With Elle’s insights, we examined how this understanding can enhance empathy, helping us cultivate healthier relationships and a clearer path for personal development. Enhancing Relationships Through Enneagram Insights
Your Enneagram type corresponds to your ego. Each of us develops this ego during childhood to navigate life. The Enneagram identifies nine distinct ego types, each with specific beliefs about the world and behaviors aimed at achieving security and self-esteem. However, these egos also harbor unconscious patterns—blind spots—that hinder personal growth.
Understanding your Enneagram type acts like a mirror, revealing why you think, feel, and behave the way you do.
With this self-awareness, you can better comprehend your interactions in both personal and professional realms. It allows you to recognize communication styles that either strengthen or weaken relationships. Moreover, it fosters empathy by illustrating how others perceive the world through different lenses based on their Enneagram types.
Interactions Among Different Enneagram Types
Professional dynamics: An Enneagram Type 1 thrives on structure and high standards. In a workplace, they excel at maintaining order but can be perceived as overly critical. When paired with an Enneagram Type 7, who enjoys spontaneity, tension may arise as the Type 7 feels constrained by the Type 1’s rigidity. Understanding each other allows Type 1 to value Type 7's creativity, while Type 7 appreciates Type 1’s discipline.
Personal dynamics: An Enneagram Type 2 often prioritizes the needs of others to feel fulfilled, sometimes neglecting their own. In a relationship with an Enneagram Type 5, who values independence, there can be tension if Type 2 feels rejected and Type 5 feels overwhelmed. By recognizing their types, Type 2 can learn to provide Type 5 with space, while Type 5 can understand and reassure Type 2's need for connection.
Ultimately, knowing your Enneagram type serves as a guide for personal growth. It helps you navigate your strengths and challenges, meeting others where they are, whether in collaborative projects or deepening personal connections. Self-awareness opens doors to more honest, compassionate communication.
Practical Steps for Growth After Discovering Your Type
Understanding your Enneagram type extends beyond a simple test; it involves a deep exploration of your behaviors and motivations. Here are six steps to guide you toward uncovering your behavioral patterns and fostering growth in your life.
1. Familiarize Yourself with All Nine Types
If you’ve taken an online test, that's a solid start! Don’t stop there; use it as a springboard. Research all nine types, especially the top three from your results, and reflect on your behaviors.
Self-observation is essential.
2. Recognize Your Single Dominant Type
You may feel connected to several types, but there’s always one that stands out. Consider who you’ve been since your late teens, especially in stressful situations. Your instinctual reactions reveal your true type.
3. Investigate the 27 Subtypes
Each type has three subtypes (self-preservation, social, one-on-one), and recognizing yours is vital. These subtypes clarify your dominant type. Dig deeper—it’s worth your time.
4. View Your Type as a Protective Mask
Your Enneagram type represents your ego, a mask developed for comfort and safety. Understanding this helps you shed the facade and reconnect with your authentic self.
5. Commit to Self-Observation
The Enneagram encourages curiosity. Observe your behaviors. By recognizing your unconscious patterns, you awaken and can start making meaningful changes.
6. Reflect on Your Personality’s Limitations
As you observe, ask yourself: Why did I adopt this behavior? How might it be hindering me or affecting others? What could I gain by letting it go? These reflections will guide you from awareness to transformation.

Advice for Those Unsure of Their Core Type
Feeling uncertain about your core Enneagram type is completely normal. The Enneagram encompasses all nine types, representing the entirety of our being. As children, we naturally accessed all nine points, but as we matured and developed our egos, we lost touch with many of them. You may relate to traits from multiple types, which is expected.
Many types can appear similar on the surface. For instance, some may exhibit people-pleasing tendencies while others are more straightforward. However, the motivations behind these behaviors vary significantly.
To utilize the Enneagram for profound transformation, it’s crucial to identify your dominant type. You can explore my resources page to help clarify your type or schedule a typing interview with me for personalized assistance.
Addressing Criticism of the Enneagram's Complexity
This complexity is what makes the Enneagram truly beautiful. It’s not a quick fix; rather, it’s a profound framework for lifelong exploration.
In today’s fast-paced world, our attention spans have diminished, making it challenging to pause and reflect. This constant stimulation hinders our ability to connect deeply. The Enneagram offers a way to slow down, reflect, and gain clarity on who you are, paving the way for a more meaningful life.
While it may feel overwhelming, I created a 9-Week From Ego to Essence Coaching Program to guide you through the foundational principles of the Enneagram.
