I spoke with Jamie Pabst, the founder of a popular app that integrates music therapy with neuroscience, to uncover the secrets behind sleep frequencies and how to use them effectively.
Why Listening to Specific Frequencies Aids Sleep
Pabst's app harnesses music and sound to alleviate stress, making it a valuable tool for enhancing sleep quality. She explains, "The right sound can be a powerful sleep aid. Certain frequencies influence our brainwave patterns through a process called entrainment, allowing the brain to align with the frequency it hears, promoting relaxation."
As we transition from wakefulness to sleep, our brainwaves slow down. They are fastest when we're alert and gradually decelerate as we relax, reaching their slowest rate during deep sleep. "Music serves as a source of entrainment, potentially speeding up this process," she adds, noting that for the one in three adults struggling with sleep, sound can be a beneficial starting point.

Pabst shares that while research in this area is ongoing, the most beneficial frequencies for sleep are delta waves, typically falling between 0.5-2 Hz. She specifically recommends pink noise.
"Pink noise provides a gentle auditory backdrop, reminiscent of natural sounds like ocean waves or rain," she says. Incorporating pink noise before bed not only helps with falling asleep but also with staying asleep.
"Its comforting qualities mask environmental sounds," she notes. "Experts, including our lead neuroscientist, often endorse pink noise as the top choice among various noise types for sleep."
Do Other Frequencies Assist Sleep?
You may have heard of other noise types, such as white, pink, and brown noise. While white noise is often believed to be a catch-all for background sound, Pabst clarifies that's not entirely accurate. "Sound comprises waves of varying frequencies," she explains. "The 'color' of noise illustrates how these waves are distributed across the audible spectrum, akin to how light colors depend on energy distribution."
So, what distinguishes white, pink, and brown noise? Here's how Pabst breaks it down:
- White noise: Contains all frequencies at equal levels, producing a harsh static sound with more high-frequency energy than most natural sounds.
- Pink noise: Prioritizes lower frequencies, resulting in a softer, more enjoyable sound with less high-frequency hiss.
- Brown noise: Focuses even more on low frequencies, creating a deep and rumbling tone.
While personal preferences vary, studies indicate pink noise is optimal for sleep. "Interestingly, white noise has historically been viewed as the go-to sleep aid, but pink noise's gentler emphasis on lower frequencies makes it superior," Pabst points out. "I'm passionate about educating others on effectively using sound and music for health benefits."

Investing in quality speakers or comfortable headphones can enhance your sleep environment. "I personally prefer Apple AirPods. A small portable Bluetooth speaker like the Sonos Roam is also a great bedside option," recommends Pabst.
When it comes to frequency sources, Pabst advises choosing scientifically backed options. "With so many choices available, it can feel overwhelming. I suggest finding an app focused on therapeutic music principles supported by research," she says, highlighting her app as a prime example.

Temperature and light also significantly impact sleep quality. "Opt for sheets or pajamas made of natural fabrics like cotton or linen, as they help keep you cool at night," she suggests. Generally, aim to maintain your bedroom temperature between 68 and 65 degrees.
"Finally, light can disrupt your sleep by interfering with your natural sleep-wake cycle," Pabst adds. "Using a sleep mask is advisable if you're in a light-polluted environment."
