Orange date cinnamon rolls make for a truly festive breakfast. I adore all kinds of cinnamon rolls—whether they come from a tube, are homemade, or are savored by peeling apart the dough or diving into the gooey centers first. While I appreciate the classics, this recipe introduces a surprising yet scrumptious ingredient: dates.
These rolls maintain the classic ooey-gooey texture, but the filling is crafted without refined sugars. Soaked dates, blended with aromatic spices and fragrant orange zest, create a unique flavor profile that takes these cinnamon rolls to new heights. Your holiday brunch will never be the same!

Crafting Date Paste
While a traditional cinnamon-brown sugar mixture is perfectly acceptable for the filling, I prefer my desserts to be less sweet and more flavorful. Using dates in the filling provides these orange date cinnamon rolls with a deliciously gooey texture and a rich caramel taste. If you weren't aware of their presence, you might not even guess! To prepare the date paste, soak pitted dates in hot water until soft—this usually takes about 20-30 minutes. Blend the dates with spices and orange zest until smooth. If the paste is too thick, incorporate some of the reserved soaking water to achieve the desired consistency. Trust me, even if you're skeptical about dates, this technique will surprise you.

Spices for the Filling
Fresh spices are essential, and for these orange date cinnamon rolls, I generously use a variety. I include freshly ground cinnamon, a notable amount of ginger, cardamom, salt, and plenty of orange zest. Prior to baking, the filling might taste quite spicy with a savory kick—addictive like a hot tamale. However, once baked and topped with frosting, all the spice mellows into a rich, flavorful delight.

Making Cinnamon Roll Dough
I've long been an admirer of a fantastic cinnamon roll recipe. Although making risen dough can feel daunting, I've learned to recognize the right texture to know when it's ready. For these orange date cinnamon rolls, I rely on a recipe that yields an exceptionally soft and fluffy dough.

Frosting for Cinnamon Rolls
Four words: orange cream cheese frosting. This silky, slightly sweet frosting, complemented by zesty orange, is the perfect crown for orange date cinnamon rolls. When they emerge from the oven, apply a thin layer of frosting while the rolls are still warm, allowing it to seep into every crevice. After they cool slightly, add more frosting, and don't forget to save some for later—you'll want it!

Ingredients
Units Scalefor the dough:
- Choose your favorite cinnamon roll dough recipe—I used a popular recipe for the dough. Follow the preparation instructions.
for the filling:
- 12–15 Medjool dates, pitted
- 2 cups of hot water
- 1 1/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tablespoon ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Zest of 1 orange
- 1–2 tablespoons orange juice
for the orange cream cheese frosting:
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 4 tablespoons butter, softened
- 1 – 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- Pinch of salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons orange juice
- Zest of 1/2 an orange
Instructions
- Prepare your preferred cinnamon roll dough. Make the date paste during the final rise.
- For the date paste, bring about 2 cups of water to a simmer in a pot. Pour hot water over the pitted dates in a bowl and let them soak for 20-30 minutes until soft.
- In a food processor, combine the softened dates (reserve the soaking water), cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, salt, and orange zest and juice. Blend until smooth. Adjust spices to taste. If desired, add a tablespoon of coconut sugar for extra sweetness, though they're usually sweet enough as is. If the paste is too thick, add a tablespoon of reserved date water at a time to achieve the right consistency.
- Roll out the dough into a rectangle measuring 12 x 16 inches and evenly spread the date paste on top. Roll the dough tightly from the long side. Cut the rolled dough into 1-2 inch thick pieces, depending on your preferred roll size.
- Place the rolls in a prepared pan and follow your dough instructions for any additional rising and the baking process.
- While the rolls bake, prepare the frosting. In a bowl, combine cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, salt, vanilla, orange juice, and zest. Mix until smooth with a hand mixer or whisk. Adjust sugar as necessary.
- Once the rolls are baked, take them out of the oven and spread about half a cup of frosting over the warm rolls. Allow them to cool to room temperature, then apply more frosting. Enjoy!
