Jen Hatmaker realized her financial detachment only after her marriage ended. Here’s how she regained control over her finances.

Life often jolts us awake, sometimes subtly, other times suddenly. Many women experience this awakening through major shifts: job losses, new motherhood, or divorce. When those events occur, a common realization surfaces: I’m not aware of my financial status. I’m unsure of my savings. What should I do next?

This was the case for best-selling author and podcast host Jen Hatmaker. Despite her successful career and being the primary income earner, post-divorce, she found herself lacking access to essential financial details. She was unaware of the number of accounts she had, the bills she owed, and how to reclaim her financial control.

In her memoir, “AWAKE,” Jen discusses the dissolution of her 26-year marriage and the subsequent emotional, spiritual, and financial awakening she experienced. She joined a podcast to share how she recognized she had outsourced her financial responsibilities and the steps she took to rebuild her financial life.

A 90-Day Journey to Financial Awareness

Podcast Host: In those 90 days, you embarked on a financial recovery journey with your planner. What was that experience like, especially since it was your first time dealing with these issues?

Jen Hatmaker: It felt like an intense crash course. Here’s what I tackled:

  • Change every bill to my name
  • Open new accounts and create automatic payments
  • Close joint credit cards
  • Refinance my home
  • Meet with a CPA to assess my tax situation
  • Cancel unnecessary subscriptions
  • Reduce discretionary spending for three months

When my financial advisor handed me that list, I was overwhelmed and cried in my car. Yet, I tackled it piece by piece.

Finding Security Beyond Stability

Podcast Host: I’m glad to hear it wasn’t overwhelmingly difficult, as I feel the same. It’s tedious work, but not particularly hard. Was there a moment when you felt you had a handle on it?

Jen Hatmaker: I distinctly remember feeling triumphant when I completed my home refinance. By then, all my accounts were established, my taxes were up to date, and I felt accomplished. I thought to myself, I did it.

In that moment, a wave of security washed over me. I realized I was now in control of my financial future. I wouldn’t deceive myself, waste my resources, or overspend. I finally felt safe.
