It was probably the homemade pasta that captured my heart. Or perhaps the beautiful table settings adorned with candles and wine. Maybe it was the chic outfits? Regardless, I found myself enamored with chef and entertaining guru Olivia Muniak as I explored her Instagram page. I couldn't help but wonder if this admiration could translate to real life. A casual chat over coffee at Gjusta confirmed it—absolutely!
When Olivia moved to Los Angeles from NYC in 2019, she began hosting intimate dinners in her cozy backyard. These gatherings reminded her of the joys of sharing home-cooked meals and fostering meaningful conversations, reminiscent of her European travels. This passion evolved into La Cura, a catering and events company that embodies the spirit of celebration and connection.

For Olivia, evenings start with a delightful aperitivo featuring seasonal snacks that spark conversation. The ambiance is effortlessly elegant, with open doors inviting guests to mingle between the kitchen and patio. During a recent visit to her casita in LA, we experienced this charm firsthand—it’s exactly how we envision summer entertaining. Read on for insights from my interview with Olivia, featuring all the details about her aperitivo.

Olivia’s Culinary Philosophy
What sparked your interest in cooking?
Cooking has fascinated me since childhood. Growing up in New York City, my family owned several restaurants where I eagerly took on the role of sous chef. My Wednesday afternoons were spent learning from pastry chefs at Mangia, my parents' restaurant. Over the past seven years, I’ve honed my culinary skills through self-education, diving into cookbooks and practicing techniques. In restaurants, I made the most of quieter days, chatting with chefs and soaking up their expertise.
Cooking is beautiful because it’s always evolving, even for experienced chefs.

What influences your cooking style?
In 1981, my parents launched Mangia, a quaint cafe that served freshly prepared salads and pastries long before the concept of “fast-casual” existed. Their innovation laid the foundation for my culinary style, which combines elegance and relaxation. My father expanded the business into fine-dining restaurants in Greenwich Village, setting a standard for quality. Their approach to creating a welcoming environment, along with the food, significantly shapes my culinary philosophy and the essence of La Cura.

Which cookbooks do you love?
Gjelina is a favorite because it taught me not just how to cook, but also how to experiment with flavors and textures. While working there, I practiced various recipes on my days off, progressing from simple vegetable dishes to more complex ones. I also adore Old World Italian by Chef Mimi Thorisson, which beautifully blends classic recipes with charming anecdotes.

How did La Cura come about?
La Cura emerged from my desire to foster connections through shared meals. After moving to LA and feeling the absence of a close-knit group, I realized I needed a larger community. Drawing from my background in brand marketing, I began producing events for Moet Hennessy and found joy in the food and wine experience. This realization led to the creation of my Supper Club, where the goal is to bring people together around the table. La Cura evolved to provide thoughtfully curated events that elevate the catering experience.
What cooking tool do you swear by?
Without a doubt, my microplane grater is essential. I use it daily for zesting citrus or finishing dishes with finely grated parmigiano reggiano—it’s versatile and indispensable.

Olivia’s Home Aesthetic
Tell us about your lovely casita.
Finding my casita was a journey. After moving back in with my mom while establishing my life in LA, I dreamed of having my own space. Ten months in, I started searching for a home. After seeing just two properties and feeling uncertain, I paused my search. But then, in August, I received a listing for the casita. There was something unique about it, so I quickly arranged a visit. I instantly fell in love with its warmth. Although another buyer had made an offer, I outbid them and included a heartfelt letter about what this home meant to me. A month later, it was mine!
The previous owners had excellent design taste and restored the home beautifully. The backyard was unfinished, so I transformed it with cement pavers and astro-turf, perfect for entertaining. Now, I’m working on significant upgrades: installing HVAC, updating the bathroom vanity, and finalizing my bedroom decor.

What does your morning routine look like?
I cherish my coffee ritual. I use an Alessi percolator for a strong brew, adding a teaspoon of Coconut Blossom sugar and a splash of homemade almond milk. I usually skip breakfast and start my day with Athletic Greens, which keeps me satisfied until lunchtime.
Describe a typical day for you.
I’m an early riser, waking up at 7am, regardless of how rested I feel. Coffee gets me moving, and I create a to-do list while reviewing my calendar. When I’m disciplined, I squeeze in a brief meditation. Mornings are for meetings and computer work; I often fit in a pilates class at lunchtime. My afternoons are spent meeting clients or running errands for events, although this routine changes when I’m in the thick of event production.

What staples do you always keep in your fridge?
I always have three essentials: fresh herbs and citrus, alliums (like garlic and onion), and parmigiano reggiano. These items enhance any vegetable or carb, ensuring even last-minute dinners are delicious. Additionally, I keep sauces such as harissa, miso, and pesto for dressings or dips.

What drinks are a must for your bar?
- Three types of vermouth: blanc, dry, and sweet
- London Dry Gin
- Bourbon
- Mezcal
- Bitters: Cochi Americano and Campari

On Hosting Gatherings
What table products do you adore?
I’m currently in love with Il Buco Vita’s handmade dishes from Italy. This year, I invested in a mixed set. For glassware, I frequently shop at Crate & Barrel and CB2 for stylish, affordable options.

Your go-to signature dishes for gatherings?
I love serving a Kale & Fennel salad with Ricotta Salata, Saffron Mussels, Vongole, Beef Tenderloin, Butcher Steak & Chimichurri—flavorful dishes perfect for sharing. No meal is complete without dessert; I enjoy making Tiramisu and Panna Cotta.

Any tips for hosting on a budget?
Encourage everyone to bring a bottle of wine! I also recommend serving a simple dish like mussels with grilled bread or a hearty vegetable pasta—both are budget-friendly and impressive.

What’s your ideal centerpiece?
I prefer skipping a traditional centerpiece in favor of small bud vases filled with greens or flowers, paired with candles. This keeps the table visually appealing while allowing guests to connect with each other comfortably.

What’s your favorite conversation starter?
I use conversation cards at my Supper Club, featuring questions that range from deep to playful, like favorite qualities in a partner or favorite curse words.

What does your ideal dinner party playlist look like?
I enjoy Old World classics for an elevated yet lively atmosphere. Artists like Cesaria Evora and Buena Vista Social Club are frequent fixtures on my playlist.

What’s your foolproof party tip?
Always make sure your dishwasher is empty before guests arrive!

Fill in the blank:
A perfect meal should … be enjoyed by candlelight.
It’s not a dinner party without… dessert and after-dinner drinks.
Every cook should know how to… create homemade dressings, aioli, and pesto. Once you try making them from scratch, store-bought versions just won’t compare!
