If you've been following our journey, you know our home renovation is well underway and has transformed considerably over time. While I've shared glimpses on Instagram, I'm excited to provide a full account of our planning process here. For those new to the story, let's start with some background.

Adam and I constructed our home a decade ago, beginning the design work just after our honeymoon. It's been a joyful space filled with wonderful memories, from lively pool parties to family dinners. Phoebe and Henry have grown up here, making it a cherished dream home. After ten years, both our tastes have evolved, and with our increased knowledge of design, we felt it was time to pursue some of our newer ideas for the house.

Living Room Before Renovation

Last fall, we engaged architects Patrick and Paige, who helped us draft extensive renovation plans. My talented friend, designer Claire, created some fresh furniture layouts, and we enlisted our builder, Monte Goertz, to navigate planning and permits. Just as we were about to commence, Covid struck, halting everything. Initially, I was disappointed, eager to kick off the renovations. However, being at home during quarantine made us appreciate our current space even more, leading us to reconsider the need for an extensive renovation.

Embracing the constraints, we pivoted to explore minimal changes that would refresh our home without the need for lengthy disruption. We focused on how to enhance styling and decor to create a new feel without major structural work. Surprisingly, this approach proved enjoyable, and we managed to begin our project just before heading to Malibu, finishing up around our return five weeks later.

As we near the project's completion, our main focus areas are the living room, kitchen, and master bedroom. Check out the IGTV below for a peek at our progress, and scroll for my inspiration board, product links, and more details.

LIVING ROOM CHANGES

1 – Plaster Walls

The most significant update is the walls, where we're applying a stunning clay product called American Clay. I'm thrilled about the warm, earthy texture it will add, using a neutral shade called Forté White.

2 – Flooring

Our travertine tile has accumulated grime over the years, leading to a yellowish tint, and the glossy finish no longer appeals to us. Instead of new flooring, we consulted a local stone care expert who tested honing techniques, achieving remarkable results. We aim for lighter, matte floors that feel fresh and clean, saving significantly compared to complete replacement.

3 – Fireplace Refresh

We're also cleaning the fireplace for just $200. A technician will remove soot, restoring the terra cotta tiles to their original warmth.

4 – Furniture Layout

After a decade with the same furniture arrangement, it was time for a new perspective. Claire provided various layouts to inspire me. She also assisted in sourcing fixtures and furniture, responding to my numerous inquiries. Here's her proposed layout that we'll follow:

Choosing new furniture has been a delightful process that will shift the room's ambiance. Here's my inspiration board with some pieces on order:

KITCHEN UPDATES

Our kitchen plans have undergone the most transformation: we initially intended to replace the cabinetry with natural white oak and add an archway leading to a breakfast nook. After careful consideration, we chose to embrace a striking contrast of dark wood and white plaster, capturing a look that resonates more with us.

Here are the key elements in the revised plan:

1 – Open Shelving

We're replacing the dark wood cabinetry to the right of the hood with open shelves. This relatively inexpensive change should brighten the kitchen significantly.

2 – Hood Surround

I'm eager to swap the shiny stainless hood for a softer, organic option. Inspired by an image (below), we designed a subtly tapered surround to be plastered with the same American Clay as the walls.

3 – Countertops

I've long admired Caesarstone's Cloudburst Concrete. It's a lovely soft white that mirrors the wall plaster. I committed to using it for the countertops, backsplash, and a waterfall edge for the island.

4 – Appliances

Our aging appliances were in dire need of replacement. I'm thrilled about Kitchenaid's new commercial range, which features a clean design reminiscent of restaurant equipment. I can't wait to cook with this new setup. We also selected this stunning fridge, wine cellar, and Kitchenaid's new dishwashers.

5 – Fixtures

A simple change that will have a big impact is swapping our stainless faucet and cabinet hardware for more affordable options I found online.

With the final touches nearing, I can't wait to reveal how everything turns out. Stay tuned for the grand reveal, and in the meantime, feel free to explore our home before the renovations started…
