In her East Austin studio, Alexandra Valenti creates a vibrant atmosphere where emotion and memory come alive through color. This light-filled haven is where she transitioned from a renowned photographer to a full-time painter five years ago, showcasing her remarkable talent in large-scale artwork.

You can truly sense the rhythm of her creations. Each piece radiates a joyful spontaneity that makes them feel personal and distinct. Embracing the idea that “Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working,” Valenti exemplifies this philosophy as she continuously evolves in her craft. She’s always moving forward, experimenting, and playing. Let’s explore the practices that help her maintain that creative flow every day.

What daily commitment do you make, regardless of circumstances?

I prioritize quality sleep, aiming for 7-8 hours nightly. Without it, productivity simply falters. Recently, I got an Oura Ring, and I’m fascinated by my sleep scores each morning.

How does your studio's design align with your artistic goals?

The studio is open and functional, featuring two workbenches stocked with supplies and a designated area for administrative tasks. The walls are adorned with my artwork, emphasizing that every aspect of this space is dedicated to creating. My goal remains straightforward: produce art daily.

What’s your first task upon arriving at the studio?

I handle emails (not the most exciting part!) before diving into painting.

Any daily or weekly tasks you particularly enjoy?

I strive to keep my studio organized and tidy. Regularly straightening up and watering my plants helps clear my mind. The notion of a chaotic artist’s space just doesn’t resonate with me.

What’s your favorite scent?

I’m fond of a candle from Carrière Frères, particularly the Lycopersicon Esculentum Tomato candle.

Does music influence your daily routine?

Absolutely. My playlist shifts regularly; this week it’s been Harry Nilsson, last week was The Beastie Boys, and prior to that, I enjoyed The Elvis Soundtrack. I also listen to numerous podcasts.

What keeps your energy up during the day?

Exercise is key for me. I mainly focus on weight training and yoga, complemented by a smoothie packed with nutritious ingredients.

Where do you seek inspiration during creative blocks?

I step back and avoid forcing it. That often leads me to leave the studio for a walk, a massage, or a yoga nidra meditation. Engaging in self-care helps me relax and regain clarity. Travel is especially revitalizing; after a trip to NYC in July where I explored museums and walked extensively, I returned home buzzing with inspiration.

What’s the best wellness advice you’ve received?

Commitment and consistency are crucial. Progress is cumulative, whether in supplements, exercise, or meditation, and it doesn’t happen overnight.

What’s the best career advice you’ve received?

Be committed and be consistent! That’s really the core of it. Show up every day, dedicate time to your craft, and ensure you pour love into what you do. Without passion, it’s hard to stay motivated.

How would you describe your work/life balance? Are you structured, or do you multitask effectively?

I thrive on structure. I maintain a clear separation between work and personal time, adhering to regular hours. After studio hours, I focus on personal activities, whether cooking, spending time with friends, or winding down by 10:30 p.m. Sometimes, I’ll jot down notes for tomorrow’s painting on my iPad before sleeping.

Giving myself space leads to greater clarity.

What’s your favorite spot in the studio and why?

Although the space is open, I particularly enjoy the couches near the large windows overlooking the courtyard.

What’s your favorite way to relax after a long day?

I love swimming with my dog, Buck Henry.

What’s your favorite time of day and why?

Early mornings are my favorite. It’s peaceful, perfect for coffee, and full of potential.
