As the new season of the show kicks off, we spoke with Simon about frequent flower arranging blunders and how to fix them. His insights are invaluable for anyone looking to elevate their floral game.
What are the fundamental principles of flower arranging?
Essential elements to consider in flower arrangements include balance, proportion and scale, unity, harmony, rhythm, and emphasis.
Which flower arranging habits should we change?

Relying on floral foam
One frequent error happens before we even begin arranging. Simon points out that many people opt for green floral foam, but he suggests that using a vase filled with water is a much better choice.
'Flowers thrive longer in water than in foam, and it's more environmentally friendly,' he explains. 'Whenever possible, skip the floral foam,' he advises.

Ignoring seasonal blooms
Even if you steer clear of floral foam, Simon highlights another fundamental mistake that can affect the longevity of your flowers.
'Consider your vision. If you want a tall arrangement, use elegant branches like White Leaf and Sorbus, complemented by striking British Alstroemeria,' he suggests.

His recommendations not only enhance the health of your flowers but also elevate the visual appeal, perfect for your gatherings. 'For a stunning centerpiece for your dining table, think about sweet peas, garden roses, and Cow Parsley,' Simon advises.

Despite common mistakes, Simon encourages aspiring florists to 'choose seasonal flowers' and let them 'naturally arrange themselves in a vase.'
'While they might not last as long as lilies or orchids, seasonal options are fragrant and beautiful. If you want something effortless, pick blooms that catch your eye as you pass by,' he adds.
Neglecting to refresh vase water
Another mistake Simon emphasizes is failing to change the water in your vase. He advises, 'Trim the stems, place them in fresh water, and replace it daily for maximum enjoyment.'
