While beige and crisp white kitchens have had their moment, a vibrant transformation is underway as we head into 2024. Designers are excited to share their predictions for the coming year's top home trends.

Warm tones and maximalism are gaining traction, with bathrooms evolving into spa-like sanctuaries. Mixed metals, sculptural woods, and a commitment to sustainability are also on the rise. Although clean whites will always have a place, designer Devon Wegman notes, “People are moving away from safe neutrals. Today's designs feature striking stone, bold artwork, and eye-catching chandeliers. Homeowners want individuality, which calls for taking bold risks.”

Here are the standout design trends predicted for 2024.

Farewell to Gray Hues

“The gray trend for paints and flooring will be left behind in 2024—finally!” declares Eddie Maestri, principal architect and founder of Maestri Studio in Dallas, Texas.

Peak Peterson, interior design principal at Hoedemaker Pfeiffer in Seattle agrees, stating, “Cool gray spaces are fading, as a preference for warmer and more textured environments is emerging.”

Embracing the Wet Room

“I hope more people will embrace the wet room concept,” suggests Devon Wegman, Founder and Design Director of Devon Grace Interiors. Integrating a bathtub within the shower area allows for a luxurious soaking experience while retaining steam and heat.

Luxurious Bathroom Amenities

As wet rooms gain popularity, designers predict an overall increase in luxurious bathroom features.

“With the rise of remote work and home fitness, more people will seek spa-like environments at home,” explains Brad Ramsey of Brad Ramsey Interiors. “Steam showers, infrared saunas, and cold plunges are becoming more common in our designs as they become more accessible.”

Peak Petersen also sees a rise in sophisticated bathroom lighting. “Beyond simple sconces flanking mirrors, 2024 will explore backlit mirrors and integrated ceiling lights, adding a sleek touch to bathrooms,” shares the interior design principal of Hoedemaker Pfeiffer.

Embracing Purple

“A new color family is taking center stage: purple—not the bright shades you might expect!” says Joshua Smith, principal and founder of Joshua Smith Inc. “Think deeper tones like plum and amethyst, even deep magenta. This color promotes emotional harmony and balance.”

Color consultant for Farrow & Ball, Demaudecia Taylor, notes that this resurgence of purple comes with a modern twist. “Instead of reserving these shades for small spaces, rich tones like Preference Red No. 297 and Brinjal No. 222 are now being used in larger areas, creating cozy environments in bedrooms and formal dining rooms,” Taylor observes.

Sleek Green Living

Smith anticipates a stronger push for sustainability this year, with improved client education and vendor transparency. Architect Tori Masterson from Hoedemaker Pfeiffer expects a polished appearance for recycled materials.

“Rustic reclaimed materials are being replaced by refined, restored options for their next life,” Masterson comments.

Integrating Nature into Design

“Nature will play a central role in 2024 design, moving beyond merely bringing the outdoors inside—it will be integral to the overall aesthetic,” say Katie Browning and Heather Lucas of Lucas Browning Designs. “Expect large windows framing beautiful views, skylights for starlit nights, and mirrors that amplify natural light.”

Oversized Sinks

“Clients are increasingly requesting longer sinks—ranging from four to six feet,” notes Wegman. “This allows for dual main faucets, water dispensers, disposal switches, and soap pumps, all with ample space.”

Curvy Designs

Designers agree: curves are making a comeback. “Whether in furniture design or architectural elements, curves are returning and softening our living spaces,” states Ramsey.

Less Open Kitchen Layouts

“Open kitchens are declining as people yearn for more defined spaces after adapting to remote work,” Maestri notes. “Clients prefer built-in features that resemble furniture over traditional cabinetry and are drawn to retro elements like tiled countertops and tables.”

Metallic Accents

Designers predict an increase in powder-coated pipes and unexpected metals like pewter, rose gold, and polished copper. This trend echoes Pinterest’s 2024 Home Decor Trend Forecast which predicts a shift to more adventurous metals as people move away from safe neutrals.

Warm Textural Layers

“This year’s color palette is all about warm neutrals, with a resurgence of pastels—a hint of pastel pink for sweetness, moody blue for mystery, light blue for serenity, and soft yellow or bold ochre for brightness,” share Katie Lucas and Heather Browning from Lucas Browning Designs. “These shades create spaces that are stylish yet welcoming.”

Interior designer Brad Ramsey refers to this as “tailored eclectic.” “This term often conjures images of chaotic spaces, but now it’s about layering thoughtfully,” he adds.

Organic Inspirations

“Designers and homeowners are likely to draw from nature, incorporating organic shapes, textures, and colors using materials like raffia, bone, and papier-mâché,” states Jamie Young, founder of Jamie Young Co. “I foresee a pivot in decor trends towards unique, handcrafted pieces, moving away from the minimalist styles prevalent in recent years.”
