According to a certified garden expert, "Vodka can replace traditional herbicides for broadleaf weeds like dandelions. A simple mixture of one ounce of vodka, two cups of water, and a few drops of Castile soap works well. Apply it with a spray bottle on a sunny day, as the combination of vodka and sunlight can scorch the weeds, making them easier to remove after a few days."
Why is Vodka an Effective Weed Killer?
“I teach my clients about alternative weed control methods, including vodka,” says a garden coach. “The vodka mixture can strip the waxy coating off weeds, allowing sunlight to dry out the leaves, ultimately killing the plant.”
However, using vodka is not the ideal solution for promoting a lush lawn. “This spray is non-selective, meaning it will harm any plants it touches, so caution is necessary to protect surrounding vegetation,” she warns.

“To apply vodka without harming nearby plants, paint the mixture directly onto the weeds with a small brush,” suggests the garden expert. “This technique is particularly effective for broadleaf weeds like dandelions and plantain. This method prevents the solution from drifting onto other plants.”
Due to the potential for damage, it's not recommended to use vodka on weeds in grass, such as crabgrass, as it may affect the surrounding flora.
Vodka can also be used effectively on pavers without harming the stone.

“If you’re seeking an alternative to vodka, consider industrial strength white vinegar, available at home improvement stores,” suggests the garden coach. “Look for a product with 20% acetic acid, which can work similarly.”
Another option is mixing vinegar with Epsom salts for a homemade weed killer that’s effective.
“For selective weed killers that can be applied to both weeds and lawns without damaging grass, options are limited and often require several applications,” she adds. “Otherwise, you may end up with uneven patches in your lawn.”
“To eliminate weeds without harming the grass, I recommend organic solutions,” continues the garden specialist. “Children and pets shouldn’t be near herbicides! Corn gluten meal is a safe alternative that boosts nitrogen in the soil and prevents new weed growth.”
“Prevention and early intervention are key,” she emphasizes.
Does Alcohol Kill Weeds?
Alcohol is effective against weeds, but “the best way to prevent them is to maintain a healthy lawn,” explains a lawn care expert. “A robust lawn is more likely to compete with weeds.”
“Regular feeding, aerating, and mowing will keep your grass healthy. If you see a weed, pull it out immediately!”
