For those eligible, your stimulus check is likely on its way. But if you haven’t received it, here’s what might be causing the delay and how to track its status.
About 80 million Americans received their stimulus payments last week. If you didn’t, it can feel frustrating. However, if you meet the requirements, your funds will arrive, even if they’re not in your bank account yet. Several factors could explain the absence of your $1,200 (or the amount you qualify for). Here’s a summary and how to check your stimulus check status.
You Might Not Be Eligible for a Stimulus Payment
First, confirm your eligibility for the government stimulus check. Eligible recipients are U.S. citizens who filed taxes in the last two years and earn up to $99,000 per year as individuals. Full payments of $1,200 are available for singles earning up to $75,000, heads of households earning up to $112,500, or married couples earning up to $150,000 jointly. Beyond these thresholds, the amount decreases by $5 for every additional $100 earned, ceasing altogether for single filers over $99,000 and joint filers over $198,000.
You Haven’t Filed a Recent Tax Return
Your stimulus payment depends on your annual income. If you haven’t filed a federal tax return for 2018 or 2019, you won’t qualify for this payment.
You Recently Filed Your First Tax Return Since 2017
If you just submitted your tax return, it may still be in processing. The IRS might not have your information yet to issue your stimulus check.
You Submitted a Paper Tax Return
If you filed a paper return, expect to receive a paper check. These checks will be sent out after all direct deposit payments have been processed, which may take weeks or even months.
You Didn't Receive a Tax Refund for 2018 or 2019
For your stimulus to be directly deposited, you must have received a refund via direct deposit for your taxes in 2018 or 2019. If you owed taxes and made payments from your bank account, your stimulus won’t be deposited there.
Your Refund Went to an Old Bank Account
If your tax refund was directed to a bank account you no longer use, your stimulus payment might have gone there too. Check your old accounts and update the IRS with your current information.
Your Tax Preparer Set Up a Temporary Account
Sometimes, tax preparers create temporary accounts for tax refunds. If your payment was sent to one of these accounts, it may take longer to receive your stimulus as it will need to be returned to the government first.
Check Your Status Using the IRS Tool
The IRS has a tool to help you track your stimulus payment status. You can confirm your eligibility and follow specific steps based on your situation. Once you have that information, use the “Get My Payment” tool to see the status of your payment and update your bank information. For those not required to file taxes but still eligible, there’s a “Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here” tool to ensure you receive your funds.
