When I first started decorating my home, my bedroom often took a backseat. I focused my energy on shared areas like the living room and the dining area—places where guests would notice my efforts. My bedroom, just for my husband and me, felt like a low priority. I thought, why rush to make it beautiful when other rooms needed attention?

This mindset led to a bedroom that didn't promote relaxation. Your bedroom is a sanctuary, meant to help you unwind and feel peaceful. It's the space where you spend significant time, so it deserves careful thought.

Declutter Your Bedroom: 5 Essential Removals for Serenity

If you're eager to declutter, here are five items to eliminate for a more peaceful and organized bedroom.

Visual Clutter

I'll never forget the impact of swapping out an open-cabinet TV console for one with drawers. Suddenly, my space felt lighter. Assess your bedroom for visual distractions—cluttered surfaces or overly loud decor. Remove these elements and breathe easier.

Is your nightstand overflowing? Keep only the essentials—like a lamp, a book, and a candle. A catch-all bowl can help contain smaller items. Prioritize soothing pieces and store the rest away.

Digital Devices and Interruptions

Using your phone or watching TV before bed can disrupt your relaxation routine. Instead, transform your bedroom into a restful retreat. Consider removing the TV for a week and charge your phone outside the room. I felt significantly lighter when I did this—less clutter and clearer thoughts.

If your phone serves as an alarm, consider switching to a Hatch alarm or a classic analog clock. Remember when we didn't rely on phones to wake us up?

Poor Lighting

Lighting sets the mood. If your bedroom relies solely on harsh overhead lights, consider changing it up. Replace bright lights with warm lamps or candles. Dimmable fixtures should be kept low, especially at night. Gentle lighting signals your body to unwind, promoting better sleep.

Old Linens and Harsh Textures

If your bedding is worn out, it's time for a refresh. New linens and natural materials can greatly enhance your bedroom's vibe. Is your quilt rough? Or perhaps your blanket is pilling? Surrounding yourself with soft textures and soothing colors truly makes a difference.

Additionally, consider the materials of your furniture. Opt for natural items like wood or glass whenever possible. These organic materials not only elevate your space but also create a calming atmosphere.

Address Unfinished Tasks

Piles of laundry, unopened mail, or visible to-do lists can create stress. Complete or remove any unfinished projects in your bedroom. Keep work-related items out of this space. If a laundry basket is necessary, choose one with a lid to conceal clutter. Swapping my open basket for a lidded hamper has made a noticeable difference in my tranquility.
