The start of a new year encourages us to take a step back and reflect on the lives we want to create. If you're here, it likely means you're ready to embrace the upcoming year with purpose, eager for growth and clarity.
I firmly believe in the importance of goal setting, but only after I’ve established the direction I wish to pursue. The real magic occurs before I outline any goals—when I dedicate time to envision my year.
This is why I begin each year with a reflection exercise focused on my Future Self—the person I aspire to become and the life I want to lead. If you seek support during this journey, the Future Self Worksheet guides you through these questions step by step, turning abstract thoughts into tangible understanding.
Today, we're honing in on the foundational step of the process: crafting a vision for your life.
Why I Document My Vision Annually
There’s plenty of discussion around manifestation and vision boards. While visualization holds power, I've realized it often lacks clarity on why we desire certain things—and how to integrate them into our daily lives.
As an Enneagram 3, I crave clarity and intention. I appreciate having a roadmap.
What I've discovered over time is that visualization, coupled with a practical plan for execution, is the key to making significant progress toward our dream lives.
By clearly defining my vision before goal-setting or creating a vision board, I navigate the year with greater focus and confidence. It becomes a reference point I can return to, especially when I need a reset.

How to Craft a Vision for Your Desired Life
Establishing a personal vision isn’t about creating strict plans; it’s about articulating how you wish to feel, live, and present yourself in the coming year.
Below are the nine questions I use to define my vision each year.
If you want assistance as you reflect, the Future Self Worksheet provides prompts to help clarify your emerging thoughts.
1. Craft Your 2026 Mantra
Your vision is the detailed narrative; your mantra is the concise summary.
Consider it a grounding phrase to revisit during challenging times—something you can display where it catches your eye daily. You might not find it immediately; often, it emerges as you work through the process.
Here are some mantras I've used over the years to spark your creativity:
- Less distraction, more connection.
- Slow down and enjoy.
- Elevate your energy.
- Live in the moment.
- Embrace simplicity.
- Seek joy.
2. What Does Your Ideal Life Entail?
Visualize an ordinary day in your dream life—not just the highlights. Don’t constrain your imagination to what feels feasible. Focus on the essence of a typical day in your dream life by considering these questions:
- Where are you?
- Who are you with?
- What emotions do you experience?
- What does “success” mean to you?
This activity often leads to enlightening realizations. It helps clarify what I truly desire, rather than what I think I ought to want.
3. How Do You Wish to Feel This Year?
Instead of fixating solely on results, I prefer grounding my vision in emotions. Identify up to five feelings you want to cultivate this year and revisit them regularly. Asking yourself, “How can I embrace this today?” can significantly shift your daily experience.
Examples might include:
Grounded + Centered: Calm, Steady, Peaceful
Expansive + Growth-Oriented: Curious, Creative, Brave
Energized + Motivated: Focused, Engaged, Capable
Joyful + Light: Playful, Grateful, Delighted
Confident + Self-Assured: Secure, Empowered, Aligned
Connected + Supported: Seen, Belonging, Loved
Hopeful + Forward-Looking: Optimistic, Resilient, Encouraged
4. When Do You Experience True Happiness?
This straightforward question often leads to profound revelations. How often do we operate on autopilot, neglecting to incorporate what makes us happy into our daily routines? Reflect on when you feel most authentic—perhaps while cooking, walking with a friend, or diving into a good book. Whatever it is, prioritize making time for that this year.
5. Where Do You Aspire to Travel This Year?
Instead of spontaneous travel choices, consider dreaming ahead.
Identify the destinations calling to you, then assess your calendar and budget realistically. Even if you can't visit every location this year, recognizing them plants a seed. I typically aim for one “big trip” annually, along with a few shorter domestic trips. While you might not reach them all in one year, I believe that with this mindset, your “dream destination” will become a reality.
6. Who Do You Want to Focus On?
Relationships flourish through intentional nurturing. For years, I've kept a note titled “My List” in my planner, featuring about ten individuals outside my family who I want to prioritize. These are the people I aim to invest time in and strengthen connections with throughout the year. Life can get hectic, but keeping this list handy helps me remember to reach out and stay engaged.
Your task here is to list friends, colleagues, and extended family members you want to prioritize this year. Keep it concise enough to ensure you can genuinely connect with each individual.
7. What Are Your Reading Goals for This Year?
I like to curate a small, meaningful reading list—often linked to personal growth or pure enjoyment. Starting with one book per season is a great approach.
8. What’s One New Skill You Want to Acquire?
Learning expands our horizons. Instead of overwhelming yourself, select one area you’d love to explore this year—something that feels enriching rather than performative.
9. Visually Manifest Your Vision
Once your vision is clear, creating a visual representation can be incredibly impactful.
This is where a vision board comes into play—not as a starting point, but as a means to illustrate the vision you’ve already outlined. Whether digital or physical, the images and words you choose should embody how you want your life to feel.
If you enjoy hands-on creativity, the Casa Zuma Vision Board Kit can help you make your vision tangible—beautiful enough to display in your space and meaningful enough to revisit regularly.
For those seeking guidance and community during this process, the Vision Board Workshop offers a supportive environment to craft your vision with intention—whether you join us online or in person.
Transform Your Vision into Reality
Creating a life vision is a significant act—and one you can revisit throughout the year. Celebrate this newfound clarity. You've taken an important step towards crafting a life that feels authentic, intentional, and uniquely yours.
