Every now and then, I catch myself transforming into my mom, and I genuinely mean that positively. Back in the day, she'd chop up a pear or an apple, toss it in a bowl, and generously sprinkle chaat masala over it. I remember scrunching my nose at the thought — how could something savory complement something sweet? But years later, I find myself craving that delightful spice blend on fruit almost every day.
Chaat masala is definitely my favorite spice mix. I've featured it in a watermelon salad, a chickpea salad, and even on pizza. This unique combination of spices embodies savory goodness. While you can whip up your own mix, it's often easier to purchase it — I recommend this brand.

As citrus season wraps up, I'm making the most of the oranges still available. While you can create this salad using just oranges, I thought it would be delightful to include a variety of citrus fruits to celebrate the arrival of spring. Think stunning blood oranges, sweet pink grapefruits, and classic orange slices for a beautiful presentation.

This salad is incredibly simple to assemble and bursts with color and joy. Adding avocado gives it a nice texture, and serving it atop a bed of greens would enhance the flavor even further.
If my mom were enjoying this, I bet she'd toss in some thinly sliced red onions, while my brother might spice things up with chopped chiles. Plus, to minimize waste, save the leftover orange peels in a mason jar to infuse water and sip throughout the day.
I hope you enjoy this flavor combination as much as I do!
