Materials Needed for Your Floral Pumpkin

- A pumpkin
- A knife, like this one on Amazon to hollow out the center
- A small ceramic bowl or ramekin, like these on Amazon, based on your pumpkin's size
- Floristry scissors; I use the Niwaki floral scissors from Anthropologie
- Chicken wire
- Floristry pot tape – I recommend clear pot tape from Amazon
- A variety of fall flowers, foliage, and berries. In my design, I used:
- Bay leaves
- Autumn eucalyptus
- Orange ilex berries
- Cream hypericum berries
- Orange dahlias
- Pale peach stocks
- Burgundy amaranth
- Chocolate cosmos
Step 1: Prepare the Pumpkin

Start by cutting the top off and hollowing out your selected pumpkin to prepare for the floral arrangement.
This step is crucial, as the right mechanics ensure your design has structure and longevity.
First, cut a small square of chicken wire and fold it into a pillow. I recommend wearing gardening gloves for safety.
Place the chicken wire inside a ceramic or plastic bowl (make sure it's waterproof) and secure it with pot tape. Fill it with fresh water and place it inside the pumpkin.
This method keeps the water contained, preventing the pumpkin from rotting quickly, thus prolonging the life of your floral arrangement.
Eco tip: Avoid using floral foam for this project. While it might seem easier, using a bowl and chicken wire is a more eco-friendly alternative that allows for easy removal and reusability, plus you can compost the pumpkin afterward.
Step 2: Build a Base with Foliage and Berries

Begin by adding your foliage stems to create the arrangement's shape and base. Start with bushy bay stems, then follow with some longer, flowing autumnal eucalyptus.
These greens are not only aromatic but also perfect for indoor arrangements.
Trim each stem at a 45-degree angle before placing them in the water to ensure hydration and freshness.
Once the foliage is in place, add your berries. I selected pale orange ilex (deciduous holly), which are ideal for fall, followed by the larger creamy hypericum berries. Both provide wonderful texture and can be trimmed shorter than the foliage to add depth and fill in gaps.
Step 3: Incorporate Your Fall Flowers

Now comes the fun part: adding color! Start with the spire shapes and focal blooms, followed by delicate accents.
In this arrangement, I evenly distributed burgundy amaranth, varying the heights, followed by the rich orange dahlias—perfect for the season.
Ensure each stem is placed in water; it's easy to overlook this with many stems in the pumpkin.
Next, I included pale peach stocks for contrast and finished with chocolate cosmos (my favorite for their velvety petals and cocoa aroma). Keep these stems long to create a lovely flow over the larger blooms.
Once you're satisfied with the arrangement from all angles, check for gaps and ensure the chicken wire isn't visible.
This design can last a week indoors and up to three weeks outside.
Essential Tools for Fall Floristry
Floristry Scissors
These scissors are similar to my daily use ones. Their ergonomic design minimizes strain, plus they're incredibly sharp.
White Artificial Pumpkins
Surround your floral pumpkin with real or faux white gourds for added visual appeal. They make a stunning addition to a front porch or Thanksgiving table setting.
Hori Hori Knife
This versatile knife is perfect for hollowing out pumpkins. Its sharp blade makes quick work of cutting and removing seeds and pulp.
There are numerous creative ways to decorate with pumpkins this fall. Consider crafting floral crowns on smaller gourds by poking flowers and foliage into holes around the top. Chrysanthemums and strawflowers are excellent choices, staying fresh for weeks, especially outdoors.
