As we stepped inside the tranquil one-bedroom cabins—two nestled side by side—we were captivated. Natural materials harmonize beautifully with subtle industrial touches. Sunlight streams through expansive windows, illuminating the interiors and offering breathtaking desert views. Every detail is thoughtfully curated for a sense of ease.
“We aimed to create a zen, calming atmosphere,” Smith shares. “A place to escape the chaos of city life and breathe in tranquility.”

Smith and her husband constructed the cabins from scratch, collaborating closely with Duane Smith from Hundred Mile Homes.
The building process was extensive, as any home construction is, but the outcome clearly justifies the effort. The couple’s intention is to host family and friends often—when they’re not already booked. (Indeed, they’re available for rent separately or together on Airbnb and Vrbo.)
We invited Smith to guide us through the cabins and her design journey. Here’s her insight into achieving that laid-back, high-desert feel.

What inspired the cabin designs?
Tyler and I have a deep love for the desert. We envisioned a unique space to reconnect and also a place to share with loved ones—not too far from amenities and the national park. Our realtor, Clayton Baldwin, discovered the ideal plot with spectacular views.

What features stand out in the cabins and their environment?
Both cabins are completely off the grid, utilizing no city electricity or water. We loved crafting spaces that maintain a low carbon footprint while blending seamlessly with nature. The cabins are situated on a 10-acre lot, surrounded by mountains, making sunrises and sunsets utterly unforgettable.
Our favorite highlights include:
- Skylights above the beds
- Outdoor showers and hot tubs
- Panoramic views from the kitchen windows
- Striking lighting above the dining tables

How would you describe the aesthetic of the cabins?
We wanted each cabin to have its unique character while maintaining a cohesive feel. We combined soft, natural materials with some industrial elements. The windows are strategically placed to maximize the views and fill the spaces with light.
The North cabin features warm tones of pink, white, and neutral shades. In contrast, the South cabin leans towards a more muted palette of browns and soft ash, lending it a moody ambiance.

What role did color play in your design choices?
I took a hands-on approach to selecting the interior finishes. While mid-century modern is popular in the desert, I gravitate towards a wabi-sabi aesthetic. Working with Duane, we effectively merged both styles to create a contemporary yet inviting atmosphere.
