During the colder months, one essential item stands out: sweaters. They provide warmth and comfort, but how often should they be laundered?

You might be surprised to learn that laundry experts recommend washing them less frequently than you do now.

Here, laundry pros discuss why your winter sweaters are often washed too often and share the ideal washing frequency.

What's the Ideal Washing Frequency for Winter Sweaters?

Rechelle Balanzat, founder of a laundry service, states, 'Most sweaters don't require regular washing.'

Typically, wool and cashmere can be worn three to five times before needing a wash, Rechelle advises.

She adds, 'If you layer with a tee or turtleneck, you may extend that even further. Some thicker winter knits can go a full season without a wash unless they show stains or odors. Wash immediately if there's visible dirt or a strong smell.'

When it comes to washing knitwear, remember that overdoing it is a bad laundry habit. Reducing wash frequency not only saves time but also cuts laundry costs.

Alicia Sokolowski, a laundry expert, agrees, noting that the frequency of washing depends on the material.

She explains that wool, cashmere, merino, and alpaca fibers are naturally resistant to odors and can self-clean to an extent. 'Aim to wash these every five to ten wears.'

In contrast, cotton absorbs moisture and odors easily, needing a wash every two to five wears. Synthetic fabrics, while prone to trapping odors, can withstand more washes. For these, a wash every three to seven wears is sufficient.

Alicia also mentions chunky knits, which are more challenging to clean. 'These should only be washed every 8-10+ wears,' she suggests.

Reasons to Wash Sweaters Less Frequently

Frequent washing can damage your sweaters.

As Rechelle explains, 'Washing creates friction, which can weaken fibers.'

'Every wash cycle puts stress on the knit, leading to pilling, stretching, fading, and misshaping. Wool and cashmere naturally resist odors and wick moisture, so they don't trap sweat like cotton t-shirts, especially since they don't usually touch the skin directly.'

Importantly, Rechelle emphasizes, 'Overwashing shortens the life of your sweater and dulls its inherent beauty.'

Proper care is essential when washing your knitwear.

'Treat your sweaters like delicate luxury items,' suggests Rechelle. 'Handle them carefully.'

Our experts recommend the following:

  • Choose a gentle detergent: 'Strong detergents can degrade fibers,' Rechelle notes. Opt for products designed for wool and cashmere, like The Laundress Delicate Wash at Amazon. Always use a small amount.
  • Utilize a mesh laundry bag: Wash sweaters inside out in a mesh bag to reduce friction and protect the knit, advises Rechelle. Consider Mainstays Mesh Wash Bag Set at Walmart.
  • Wash on a gentle cycle: 'Use cold water,' Rechelle continues. 'Select the delicate or wool cycle, or hand-wash fragile items to avoid shrinkage.'
  • Lay flat to dry: Never put sweaters in the dryer. 'Reshape while damp and lay flat on a towel or drying rack,' Rechelle recommends. Hanging can stretch them out.
  • Skip fabric softeners: 'These can coat fibers, compromising breathability and increasing pilling,' warns Alicia.

To refresh your knitwear between washes, let them air out for a few hours. 'Lay flat to rejuvenate fibers naturally,' Rechelle suggests.
